Planting in Tredegar Square
On Saturday 17th October we gathered with friends, neighbours, councillors, council staff and Trees for Cities to add new trees, hedging, perennials and bulbs to Tredegar Square. 🌳
It was a positive and upbeat day with everyone getting stuck in to dig, plant or just chat with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The 50 volunteers, together with 4 volunteer planting supervisors, planted 6 standard trees, 125 whips, 3000 bulbs and 300 perennials. So many trees 💚. The planting included apple and pear trees to create a mini community orchard (roll on harvesting time!). Everything planted will help increase canopy cover, provide natural habitats for wildlife and promote biodiversity.
"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.”
Martin Luther
Fuelled by vats of curry and entertained by storyteller Bernadette Russell, it was a great way to gather together. With many of us looking to tangible ways to make a positive impact, the planting day was an expression of practical hope and optimism.
A huge thank you to Trees for Cities for leading on the consultation and running the day. We’d also like to thank the Tower Hamlets Green Team led by Matthew Twohig who did so much work on the ground. Finally, a big cheers to Adam Armstrong (Senior Arboricultural Officer at LBTH) who made this all happen. Dream team.
If you’d like to get involved with all things green in the Square, we’re gathering a volunteer team to take care of the new additions. Message us at committee@meotra.org if you’re keen.
